Guided tour of the Church of S. Ignatius organized by the "Volunteers for Culture."

Church of S. Ignatius

The church is one of the most notable works of the ancient village of Bormio, especially due to the beauty of its interior decorations.

The church, in baroque style, features two side altars, but it is the main altar that draws attention: on it are placed two magnificent paintings by Giambattista Muttoni, a pupil of the great Jesuit painter Andrea Pozzo, depicting the Death of S. Ignatius and the Presentation of the Jesuit rules to His Holiness the Pope. Muttoni is also the author of the frescoes of the imposing dome, created using the trompe l’oeil painting technique, depicting the Descent of the Holy Spirit and several scenes from the lives of the Jesuits. The lower part, however, was painted by Giacomo Lecchi and Eugenio Ricci. Lastly, it is worth noting that beneath the presbytery of the church, although closed to the public but still very fascinating, lie the tombs of the Fathers and Brothers of the Jesuit College.
