Marcello Carrà

Born in Ferrara in 1976, Marcello Carrà has loved bringing new objects to life since childhood, letting his imagination soar, and gradually, his love for drawing took over, starting with comics and magazines. During his university years, he began to dedicate himself to painting, as a self-taught artist. After an initial surrealist phase influenced by the works of Dalì and De Chirico, since 2000 his style has approached cartoons, with very vivid colors and always quite unsettling subjects. In 2000, he also deepened his knowledge of graphic techniques, creating about fifteen etchings.

Between 2000 and 2008, he continued to paint scenes straddling surrealism and cartoons, yet he did not find a personal identification until he participated in a contemporary art orientation course for young artists, which led him to exhibit new works based on the scanning of images of insects printed on photographic paper and glued onto aluminum sheets. Using the biro, a quick and practical tool, he began to represent giant insects on theater paper.

The Syndrome of the Ball

The text, published by La Nave di Teseo in 2021, consists of 11 chapters, in which the disease of football is analyzed, generated by a genuine bacterium, the bacillus calcisticus, which attaches to brain tissues and then spreads through the blood throughout the body. The illness manifests in various forms, active, passive, mild, and severe. The entire pseudoscientific dissertation is filled with illustrations (about 200), ranging from the macabre to the surreal, passing through anatomical and naturalistic drawing. There are herbaria inspired by the world of football and a football team made up of animals. Almost all the drawings, whose original sizes are practically identical to those of the final publication, are made using very fine-tipped pens on cream-colored ingres paper; only some color illustrations are done in watercolor.

The Milanesiana

Founded in 2000 in Milan, at the initiative and under the direction of Elisabetta Sgarbi, The Milanesiana aims to intertwine different forms of knowledge and arts, presenting the international excellences of the cultural and scientific world to the general public: Nobel laureates in literature and science, Oscar-winning filmmakers, and musicians who have received the highest international accolades. Over the years, the festival has increasingly expanded its scope and, in addition to Milan, takes place in various cities in Italy, including, for the past ten years, in Bormio. Each year, The Milanesiana tackles a theme that characterizes and traverses the entire edition. This year it is "Desire and the Law."
