The Bernina Pass, at an altitude of 2,330 meters, is one of the most picturesque mountain passes in the Rhaetian Alps and provides direct communication between Valtellina and the upper Engadine valley in Switzerland.
It is named after the majestic Piz Bernina, the highest peak in the eastern Alps, which rises not far away. The wide and perfectly maintained road offers a spectacular route through snow-capped peaks, sparkling glaciers, and landscapes that change with every bend.
From the viewpoint of the pass, one can admire the Pizzo Palù glacier, Bellavista, and Bernina, scenes that attract travelers and mountain lovers from all over the world. As the highest traversable point of the road, it also marks a cultural watershed: Italian is spoken up to the pass, while beyond it, Romansh dominates.
Isolated and lacking large populated centers, the Bernina Pass is an ideal destination for a drive or motorcycle trip, and represents the natural passage for those starting from Sondrio or Valtellina who want to reach St. Moritz, immersed in the beauty of the Swiss mountains.
