The road was part of the Via Imperiale d'Alemagna a Medieval trade route which trasported wine to the central Europe in exchange for salt. It was later adapted for the costruction of the Cancano reservoir.
This is a climb with the little or no shade, surronded by the mountain pines, the invigorating of which helps to alleviate the fatigue involved.

Starting from Thursday, 20 November 2025, the road is closed to vehicular traffic for the winter season, as established by Ordinance No. 121 of 20/11/2025 of the Municipality of Valdidentro.
Is there a charge for the road to the Cancano Lakes?
Yes, during the opening period a daily ticket of €5.00 per car is required. It can be purchased at the totems in Plazurban Pedenosso and Sasso Prada, or online at valdidentroturismo.it.
Are there restrictions for certain categories of vehicles?
Yes. Access is prohibited for campers and caravans, and restrictions apply to vehicles over 3.30 m in height.
