Open

Open only during the summer season.

The Splügen Pass, at 2,117 meters above sea level, marks the border between Italy and Switzerland, connecting the high Spluga Valley, in Valchiavenna, with the upper Rhine valley.
Frequented since prehistoric times, as evidenced by stone age finds at Pian dei Cavalli, the pass became a strategic transit route with the Romans, who constructed a paved route known as the Via Spluga. This path, partially restored and now walkable, was used for centuries until the construction in 1821 by the Austrians of the carriage road that still largely follows the original route. Immersed among rocky peaks and spectacular landscapes, the Splügen Pass retains an ancient charm, uniting history, nature, and alpine culture in a single journey.
