The “Popular Civic Library of Bormio” was established in 1964 and opened to the public in 1969 at Palazzo De Simoni with a collection of around 150 volumes, initiated by the Friends of Bormio Association. In the 1970s, the library moved to the old building of the former Pio Scolastic Institute, thus combining the civic library, the ancient Jesuit library of the Pio Institute, and the municipal historical archive under a single management.
During the 1980s, the modern collection returned to Palazzo De Simoni, and the civic library, significantly expanded, regained its original identity as a public reading library. Today the library is located on the ground floor of the Municipality at via Peccedi 1.

The services

It has a collection of nearly 50,000 documents. It includes a children's section for ages 0-14 (with subsections for different age groups), a young adult section, an adult fiction and non-fiction section, a multimedia section, a local collection of over 4,500 volumes, a collection of books in original languages of over 1,000 volumes, and a section containing special historical collections, notably the remaining collection of the circulating Popular Library of Bormio, a manifestation of the national political project for popular cultural education implemented since the late 19th century.

The activities

In the library, you can participate in various initiatives related to the world of reading and culture; to follow events organized for adults, children, and teenagers you can consult the events section and stay updated by signing up for our newsletter.

The library participates in the program Born to Read, which promotes reading aloud in the family for children from 0 to 6 years old. It also promotes reading for children and teenagers in cooperation with schools.

The library, relying on the service offered by Lions Spoken Book, allows visually impaired, blind, and dyslexic individuals to access audiobooks available on the platform for free, ensuring that no one is deprived of the joy of reading.
A must-try is also the MediaLibraryOnLine service that will allow you to borrow eBooks or browse numerous newspapers.

Additionally, it participates in Volunteers for Culture, the cultural volunteering program in libraries and museums in the province of Sondrio.

The library is closed on Sundays and on national holidays
