Chiesa della Madonna del Sassello (Church of the Madonna del Sassello)

The Church of Our Lady of Sassello or of Patience was built in 1398.
The small church is located on a rocky spur, from which it derives its name. The dedication to Our Lady of Patience is due to the fact that many women turned to the Madonna for having a child, as evidenced by the numerous ex-votos, and the building is dedicated to the evangelical episode of Mary's Visit to Elizabeth.

Interior

The frescoes of the apse, with an elegant style but unfortunately not completely preserved, represent the Apostles on thrones. Presumably, as per medieval custom, the apostles would have been overshadowed by the Christ Pantocrator accompanied by the symbols of the Evangelists.
Of particular value is a 15th-century altar piece from this church and now kept in the Civic Museum of Bormio. Belonging to the type Flügelaltar (an altar with openable doors), very common in the Bormio area, this altar piece represents the Annunciation with the Pantocrator while, in the underlying niches, the Virgin with the Child and the saints Lucy and Margaret appear.

The church was enlarged in 1684 and, on that occasion, the small altar piece was moved to the left side wall of the nave to be replaced by the 17th-century altar which, according to the taste of the time, features gilded twisted columns and brackets that housed statues of saints. The altar piece accommodates a painting from 1652 depicting the Visit of Mary to Elizabeth, with the presence of St. Joseph and Zacharias, Anthony of Padua, and Charles.

Also of great interest is the monumental 15th-century crucifix now visible on the right wall and once located outside the church.  

Currently, the small church, awaiting restoration, is only visible from the outside.
