The Gavia road connecting the Alta Valtellina and, in particular, Bormio and S. Caterina Valfurva, with the Alta Val Camonica and Ponte di Legno, is especially known among cyclists as one of the legendary climbs of the Giro d’Italia. In reality, the road is a paradise for motorcycle enthusiasts as well: tight curves, hairpin bends, significant slopes, and narrow sections, sometimes a single lane, provide pure enjoyment for those who love to ride in the mountains.
Between History and Legend
The origin of the Gavia road is very ancient: since the Middle Ages, numerous caravans of merchants from the Republic of Venice crossed the pass to connect to the Imperial Road of Alemagna and from there reached Germany, Tyrol, and the countries of Northern Europe. Many fell during attempts to make the crossing, also due to avalanches during the winter months, so much so that the pass was also known as the Pass of the Dead Man's Head.
The Route
Starting from Bormio, one reaches S. Caterina Valfurva and from there the ascent towards the Passo del Gavia, at 2,621 m a.s.l. begins. Here, after admiring the lago Bianco, the descent towards the Valcamonica begins. After traversing three hairpin turns and passing through an unlit tunnel, one encounters a monument dedicated to the Alpini who died in 1954 due to a road accident involving the truck they were traveling in. The next ten kilometers are characterized by a narrow roadway that does not allow two vehicles coming from opposite directions to pass each other. The steep descent ends at Santa Apollonia and from there the route continues, wider, until reaching Ponte di Legno.
