The Spluga Pass, at an altitude of 2,117 meters, marks the border between Italy and Switzerland, connecting the high Spluga Valley, in Valchiavenna, with the upper Rhine valley. Frequently visited since prehistory, as evidenced by findings from the Stone Age at Pian dei Cavalli, the pass became a strategic transit route with the Romans, who constructed a paved path known as the Via Spluga. This route, partially restored and currently accessible on foot, was used for centuries until the construction by the Austrians in 1821 of the carriage road that still follows much of the original itinerary. Immersed among rocky peaks and spectacular landscapes, the Spluga Pass retains an ancient charm, uniting history, nature, and alpine culture in a single journey.
